CURRENT EVENT #3
ReplyDeleteThe current event that I had read about was how an international research collaborative has determined that a promising anti-material compound tricks the immune system to rapidly destroy red blood cells infected with the malaria parasite but leave healthy cells unharmed. St. Jude Children's Research Hospital scientists led the study, which appears in the current online early edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS). The compound, (+)-SJ733, was developed from a molecule identified in a previous St. Jude-led study that helped to jumpstart worldwide anti-malarial drug development efforts. Malaria is caused by a parasite spread through the bite of an infected mosquito. The disease remains a major health threat to more than half the world's population, particularly children. The World Health Organization estimates that in Africa a child dies of malaria every minute. In the study, researchers determined that (+)-SJ733 uses a novel mechanism to kill the parasite by recruiting the immune system to eliminate malaria-infected red blood cells. In a mouse model of malaria, a single dose of (+)-SJ733 killed 80 percent of malaria parasites within 24 hours. After 48 hours the parasite was undetectable. Laboratory evidence suggests that the compound's speed and mode of action work together to slow and suppress development of drug-resistant parasites. Drug resistance has long undermined efforts to treat and block malaria transmission. Researchers showed that inhibiting ATP4 triggered a series of changes in malaria-infected red blood cells that marked them for destruction by the immune system. The infected cells changed shape and shrank in size. They also became more rigid and exhibited other alterations typical of aging red blood cells. The immune system responded using the same mechanism the body relies on to rid itself of aging red blood cells. Laboratory evidence also suggests that the mechanism will slow and suppress development of drug-resistant strains of the parasite, researchers said.
This all sounds really good, but I do fear that there could be a bad outcome in the future. The anti-material could mutate and cause more problems then it was trying prevent. Though the idea of us creating methods like this one is astonishing.
DeleteIn my opinion i feel like what if that anti-material has a defect and all the people that where waiting for it doesn't get to them in time and there immune system messes up?
DeleteAnything can happen in my opinion. Everyone’s immune system is different and there is no telling how someone will react to the anti-malaria compound. The amount of time it take to eliminate all the malaria infected red blood cells can be different based on the type of the person. How resistant malaria will be in a person can be different because some people are in more of a critical condition or have been infected longer than others.
DeleteArtificial Intelligence:
ReplyDeleteThe well-known British physicist Stephen Hawking is warning us about AI (Artificial Intelligence). Hawking told the BBC "The development of full artificial intelligence (AI) could spell the end of the human race." Fear of machine domination has been around for years. From “2001: A Space Odyssey” to the “Terminator” films, AI has become a symbol in pop culture.
Inventor and futurist Ray Kurzweil, director of engineering at Google, also believes that’s once machine intelligence surpasses human intelligence the world would be at battle with one of our most incredible inventions. Kurzweil predicts that this could happen as soon as 2045. Other inventor and scientists at universities believe that it could be the biggest event in history, but it would come with a price.
Some experts disagree that AI will spell doom for humanity. Charlie Ortiz, head of AI at the Burlington, Massachusetts-based software company Nuance Communications, said the concerns are "way overblown." For the head of AI to have a say in the subject is strange. Why would the “head” say “Yes, there is a possibility of my machines rising up and killing everyone.” It wouldn’t surprise me if AI was just to keep tabs on everyone and maybe control us.
I think that the full development of artificial intelligence is a bad idea because if something goes wrong in the programming, the AI can damage whatever it is working on. We cannot rely on AI to do everything for us either. I doubt that there will be robots fighting humans for control, but if it has enough power than anything is possible. If we do have the full development of AI, then we need to keep them under control.
DeleteI find this very interesting since Stephen Hawking is able to talk because of technology. Overall I don’t know where I stand. I believe technology is great and has improved our lives greatly, but its also ruining it. I think we should continue to advance, explore, and develop AI as long as we are careful with it and keep it under control. We already spend to much time online sitting around, we need to ply this smart.
DeleteI believe that the creators of the AI would ever allow this technology to become so advanced to where it could think for its self let alone start to attack humans. If these inventers are smart enough to create such a gifted AI then they are more then capable of creating a million different kill switches for the off chance that it does get out of control. I don’t see AI posing any threat in the upcoming future.
DeleteOf course the makers of AI would say something like that. I mean it is their company they don't to make them look bad like they make killing machines or anything. However I believe that Steven Hawking is right, the more we work on these AI machines the more intelligent they may get and that could cause them to over power us.
DeleteSt. Louis police wants Rams players punished.
ReplyDeleteBefore the game Sunday afternoon, 5 Rams players walked on the field with the “Hands up, don’t shoot” pose.
Now, the St. Louis Police Officers Association wants the NFL to take action against the players, saying in a statement that it was “profoundly disappointed with the members of the St. Louis Rams football team who chose to ignore the mountains of evidence released from the St. Louis County Grand Jury this week and engage in a display that police officers around the nation found tasteless, offensive and inflammatory.”
Do you agree that they should be punished?
I strongly disagree with what the football players were saying but I don’t think they should be punished because of freedom of speech. They have the right to have a stance and support anyone they want even if some people agree or don’t agree with what they say.
DeleteThe decision the team and police department has made may make sense to some people and to others they don't. They obviously have a good reason behind their decision. If they were offending anybody then it may be a problem.
Deletei disagree with that whole argument. I don't think the players should be punished. They are allowed their own opinions and they should be able to defend who ever they want. They know that a man was choked to death and that is not ok. At the end of the day it doesn't matter what the police were arresting the man for because they didn't arrest him they killed him. People do deserve to be arrested if they commit crimes no matter how big or small but no oe deserves to die. The players were clearly affected by what happened and wanted to voice themselves without actually using their voice. Actions speak louder than words.
Delete(Devin Larkin) They should not be punished they have freedom of speech, and it's not like the stance they did was innapropriate. Technically, it could've meant anything.
DeleteI don’t think the football players should be punished. Like Devin Larkin said they have a freedom of speech. For the most part I think they had a right to do what they did, but I can see why people think it is inappropriate. With all the controversy in St. Louis I don’t think it was smart for the players to do what they did. I believe they could have expressed their opinion in a less public way.
DeleteIt depends on the punishment. People can't keep saying he was just some sweet kid, because he just graduated, was caught stealing, and assaulted the Owner. No, the boy shouldn't have died, but these people should be more mature to look past race and look at the facts.
ReplyDeleteMy current even is about 5 girls that was killed during a basketball game in China
ReplyDeleteThe girls names have not been released due to family didn’t wont them to be out there. The incident happened Monday afternoon in a middle school in Hubei City after the teams surrounded a player with a sprained ankle, according to the Anhui provincial work safety bureau. One wall on the side was very unsteady and the girl where all talking and next thing the wall fell and the wall trapped them and 3 died by impact and the other 2 later in that night had died while they where in the hospital. The parents are not only suing the schools but are suing the people who had put the wall up cause anyone could tell that the wall wasn’t steady and they still had a basketball game knowing that. In my opinion I think the school is held responsible as much as the people because no game should be going on knowing that at any moment that it could of fell.
I think the people should get more of a punishment than just being sued
DeleteI think the story is very upsetting to the family , the girl playing a sport she loved and ending up with a death, the people who built the wall should be sued and out of work , anyone who was involved with knowing the wall was not up properly should be in big trouble and greatly apologize to the family and school , if the school knew this wall could have fell someone should have cancled the game or atleast made a comment to everyone to not go near the wall
DeleteIts very disheartening to hear that the school is unsafe and that they could tell before this even happened that the wall wasn't steady. I feel sorry for these girls parents and family and the fact that they were just playing a basketball and ended up dying. I agreed with the school be responsible and same with the people people who built the wall.
DeleteI think the parents are right about not suing the school because suing the school wouldn't solve anything. The company and the employees who put the wall up are to blame about the deaths of the five girls. At the same time if anybody could see that the wall was unsafe someone should have spoke up. I can also see why you think that the school should be blamed. In the end someone should have the blame placed upon them.
DeleteThis is a depressing story. I felt bad for the girls who got knocked down by the wall. The five girls suffered a serious impact to the head. These girls were taken the hospital immediately. The family must've been worried about the wall incident. As a result of this incident, the five girls ended up dying. I think the school is responsible because they didn't secure the wall properly should get punished. They knew the wall wasn't secure and didn't do anything about it.
DeleteI agree that the school should be held responsible, not only they shouldn’t have had a basketball game but they shouldn’t have even been holding any type of school activities such as gym, ect. That wall should have been fixed as soon as the school noticed that it was unstable, witch I’m sure it was very noticeable if it had the potential to fall. Its sad that the wall had to fall and 5 girls had to die for the school to replace the wall.
DeleteLeBron, Irving in 'I Can't Breathe' tees
ReplyDeleteOn several occasions in the past couple weeks. James has spoken out about the deaths of Mike Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, and Tamir Rice in Cleveland. Like Garner, Brown and Rice were both African-American males that died because of a confrontation with a police officer. I just heard people's opinion on the topic, and I know the Cavaliers are on the road this is the place where it happened, so if they wanted to be a part of the cause or make a statement without actually necessarily saying any words. I think everybody else gets caught up in everything else besides who's really feeling it, and that's the family. I think it's really important that we show our respect to the families. More importantly we're in the city where tragedy happened and it's really important to us that we stand up for a cause, especially this one.
I think you're right about this whole thing, the officer was out of line for doing what he did
DeleteYou are completely right, we need to stand up and show that innocent people should not be turned into criminals. Most of the people who have been shot are innocent people and are just assumed to be bad by there color. There are not a lot of bad cops though, you always gotta remember the ones that are actually there to help the community and protect us.
DeleteTalent v.s Training
ReplyDeleteTo be the best athlete or musician you have to trail a lot, but when does “natural talent “ come into play. Were some of us just born to be better at what we do? To test this question in sports scientists tried subjecting untrained people to identical exercise routines to see if the same amount of training would lead to different results. Not so surprisingly different individuals had different improvement, but people who related by blood saw similar improvements. Meaning that their genetics played a role in there athletic potential. If your parent or sibling saw incredible results from training, so would you. These types of people are called high responders to training. After further testing it was found that 50% of athletic improvement was linked to genetics. But even before training scientists noticed something else. Individuals all had different baseline endurance levels as well. Without any training some people were just simply more fit than others. Turns out a different set a genes gives people a higher baseline. Meaning that people with a higher baseline can just be fit and never exercise, while if you took someone with a lower baseline that doesn’t exercise they would most likely be unfit. So you can have a high trainability, a high baseline, or both.
I believe that sports/ or athletic ability has something to do with genes. I think some people are more genetically built to be more fit and be able to accomplish something athletic. Training and practice could help with being good in something or being big but the way your genes set up or youre born is how your body will react to athletic ability. Most people who are relative seem to be able to do the same activity the same way ,
DeleteI think that people are born with athletic ability. Not everyone can do things that others can do. Training can help if you want to make improvement and be the best you can, but not everyone is athletic. On the other hand training could make a person athletic but maybe they won’t be as good as someone that is “born being athletic.” You can do anything if you put your mind to it and learn how to do new things.
DeleteI believe that everyone is born with their own talent. Whether its sports or musicians. For example no one in my family knows how to play instruments but at age 9 I taught myself how to play guitar. It could be genetics or maybe not. But i believe everyone can choose what they want to do. If you practice it a lot then you most likely will get good at it no matter if anyone you're related to did or not.
DeleteMy current event blog is about Eric Garner, the man who died from being put in a chokehold by a police officer. Yes, he was selling illegal cigarettes but I don't think it was a big enough crime to kill him on the spot. He followed the officers orders and everything but the officer felt "threatened" which I think is just a lie, thats no excuse to kill a man.
ReplyDeleteYou are right, we need to stand up and show that innocent people should not be turned into criminals. Most of the people who have been shot are innocent people and are just assumed to be bad by there color of their skin.
DeleteEric shouldn't have died. There are some people who commit bigger crimes like murder in front of cops, and get arrested for it and go to prison. Selling illegal cigarettes is no reason to get killed.
DeleteIts sad to see more and more cops killing people and getting away with it, all these innocent people are dying when theres people who have done a lot worse and are still walking the streets. Its sad to say but hopefully theres more to the story because if he followed the officers orders and he still killed him he should be put away, like logan said selling illegal cigarettes is no reason to get killed.
Deletei completely agree! No one deserves to die. Even if Eric did commit a crime he doesn't deserve to die. The police officers should stick to their jobs and arrest him not choke him to death. That is just sickening, how are we supposed to feel safe if the people that are protecting us aren't really protecting us? It just baffles me. It just scares me that the officers can just choke a man to death.

ReplyDeleteA Maryland teenager eating a pot brownie in class freaked out when his teacher asked him for a piece of the brownie and that he is now being charged for obliging. The police said tuesday the 17-year-old didn't tell the teacher that the brownie contained marijuana. She began not feeling well and acting confused and out of it than was brought to the nurse's office at Broadneck High School in Annapolis on monday. The teacher told police the student had gave her the brownie during third period and that she had a feeling it had marijuana in it. The kid from Arnold was charged with juvenile counts of administering a dangerous substance, assault and reckless endangerment. Police did not say his name, and they say he was released to a guardian. I think the kid is not bright and should of not gave the teacher the brownie and should have threw it out , he shouldn’t of had it in the first place.
ReplyDeleteI can personally agree with you on the fact that the student should not have had it anyways, especially when it comes to the fact that he brought it to school.
Delete
DeleteI agree that the student should not have had that brownie in the first place, and that he should be charged. I don’t understand why he would even bring the brownie to school and give a piece to his teacher.
i agree that certain consequences should have occurred but the student should have not given the teacher the brownie. he knew what was in it and that the teacher would not react correctly and go to the nurse. what it comes down to is common sense, why in anyones mind would they bring a pot brownie to school. the kid deserved to get arrested and charged
DeleteI think if the student was risking having a substance like marijuana in school he should not have ate it in class or gave it to the teacher he should have just threw it away and not give it to the teacher when the teacher asked for it. It was stupid to bring it into school because school is for learning not for eating pot brownies in class which was really stupid and now that kid is being charged
DeleteI believe people should do whatever they want to an extent. If you're going to bring illegal substances to school, be smart about it.
DeleteI definitely agree with you, what was this kid thinking? Why would you bring or even eat a pot brownie in school and then give it to your teacher? He should be charged and probably should’ve thought before he did anything. Where is his common sense? This whole situation is just sad and stupid. And all that comes to mind is questions, I just don’t understand why. Why would even think of doing such a thing?
DeleteI agree with you totally. Last year I knew this girl that would put pot in her coffee and give it to her friends. At first no one knew what was in the coffee, even the kids that drank it after a couple of days the girl would tell them about it if they asked. Some of my peers were very upset because they did not want anything to do with drugs and the half of the kids wanted more. Finally someone told the school's officer and her locker and bag was searched. In the officers report it stated that she had three pounds of pot all together.
DeleteI agree with you on this. The Maryland teenage shouldn't even have brought the brownie to school in the first place. Also, the teenager should be charged for bringing his pot brownie to school. In addition to this, he should be charged for possessing dangerous chemicals currently on him. It doesn't make any sense though. Why would a teenager bring a pot brownie to school that contains marijuana in it. The teenager must be out of his mind to bring something like that to school.
Deletei agree that the student should get reprimanded for what he did, but when the teacher asked him for a piece of the brownie he should have just simply told her that he was “really hungry” and “didn’t want to give her a piece”. Although he shouldn’t have had the brownie at school in the first place it was still very stupid to give the teacher a piece knowing it contained marijuana, and knowing that it could affect the teachers workability.
DeleteIsrael has indicted a 30-year-old American Christian from Texas for plotting to blow up holy places in Jerusalem. The man that was indicted is Adam Everett Livix. Livix passed himself off as an ex-U.S. Navy Seal. Police say that he faces drug charges in the US and he had once turned down an offer from a Palestinian to assassinate President Barrack Obama. Livix was allegedly working with his roommate, a serving soldier in the Israeli military, to obtain 3 pounds of explosive material to use to blow up the unidentified Jerusalem holy places. The Ministry of Justice said a police agent discovered the plot in October. Livix was indicted on Monday and is currently undergoing psychiatric evaluation. The indictment comes at a time of rising tensions in Jerusalem, mostly over a disputed holy site that is holy both to Muslims and Jews. Police went to arrest Livix at his 7th floor apartment, the ministry said, but he initially escaped by leaping onto a 6th story patio before finally being apprehended. I am glad that the plot has been stopped and I am surprised that they caught these people because one of them was a soldier in the Israeli military.
ReplyDeleteThe 2015 Corvette Zo6 is a true super car. It is a rear transaxle with a 6.2-liter v8 that is making over 600-horse power to the rear wheels. In the new zo6 model they have gone back to the Lt based motor instead of the old 7.0-liter Ls7. The naturally aspirated Ls7 motor pushed out 505-horse power. For the new Zo6 Chevrolet is using a supercharged Lt4 engine. The Lt4 will use a smaller supercharger then the Ls9 in the corvette Zr1. In the new model Zo6 Chevy is using forged pistons, custom-machined steel connecting rods; and titanium intake valves fitted to cylinder heads that are rotocast of A356T6 aluminum for greater strength and heat resistance. It also has shocks that are filled with magnetorheological fluid. It is also fitted with carbon ceramic brakes that are nearly as large as the brakes on the million-dollar Bugatti Veyron 16.4. The old Zr1 and the new Zo6 are striking in similarities. So Chevy is thinking about calling it the Zro6. The new aluminum frame is the first model with a removable roof panel. The Zo6 will be slightly heavier then the old Z06 model. But the increased power will also increase the power to weight ratio. In conclusion the 2015 Zo6 will be a improvement to the corvette line.

ReplyDeleteMy Current event is about this girl that’s suing her parents for college
Her name is Caitlyn Ricci and she is 21 years old. She has been in court battling her parents since August 2013. First she was in a internship with Disney to prepare for college but she got kicked out for underage drinking. When she returned home her parents set rules for her and she did not want to listen to them. She moved in with her grandparents. She did not speak with her parents for 2 years. Then her dad Michael Ricci found out she was going to college at Temple University in Philly. He found out through Twitter. That’s ridiculous. Michael and his wife said their daughter wanted to go to a state college they would pay but their daughter still wont talk to them. They ended up in court and the judge said Caitlyn can go to any school she wants to and her parents have to pay for it. Caitlyn really is an a**hole for what she is doing, like how are you going to get kicked out of an internship for drinking and then make your parents pay for your college tuition. That’s so low. She will not even speak to them either and they are being forced to put $16,000 forward for her tuition.
This is a ridiculous story. I can’t believe this girl is forcing her parents to pay her college tuition just because she doesn’t want to listen to their rules. It is her fault she lost her job because she chose to drink while underage; so it should be her responsibility to pay college tuition herself. It is foolish to make paying for your children’s college tuition a law. I guess some people are so greedy that they would take advantage of their own parents.
DeleteThis story is saddening, that one child will be so greedy. The daughter made her first mistake by drinking, and then getting mad that her parents set rules. Sadly what she didn’t realize is that her parents didn’t have to pay for her college it was there choice, she could have made a smarter decision other than drink. Suing your parents because they made a choice you didn’t like is low.
Deletei really think that is Bu!!$#!T because your parents raise they almost always give you what you want, the past year or so i couldn't wait to drive only to find out that the car i going to get to drive was a banged up 2000 minivan. parents do give you what you want bit, in their won way.
DeleteIt is just incredible how much technology has changed and evolved of the years. Imagine living your life without all the gifts such as cell phones, TV’s, video games, and other appliances. We are a lucky generation but at the same time we are the laziest generation. The Atomic bomb was invented 1945. The microwave was invented in 1946. Videocassette recorder was invented in 1956. The first ATM was invented in 1967. The first videogame console was made in 1968. Neil Armstrong the first man on the moon landed in 1969. E-mail was invented in 1971. Personal computers were invented on 1973. The World Wide Web also known as the Internet was invented in 1990. Digital satellite radio was made in 2001. Plasma screen TV’s were made in 2004. Major websites such as amazon, Netflix, Yahoo, and craigslist were invented in 1995. The search engine Google was invented in 2000. Popular Social Media websites such as Facebook, Skype, YouTube, and Twitter were made in 2005. IPods, IPhones, and IPads, were made in 2010. In 2014 scientists built a space rover and landed it on the surface of a comet; which has never been accomplished before in human history. There are so many devices and other inventions that influence how people live their lives.
ReplyDeleteI agree and to a point yes technology has come a far way and has helped us reach many thing that we though were impossible. Also it has saved many lives but when are we going to draw a line on how far technology will go because it’s starting to get scary. The type of tech that the government is using to track down and kill terrorists with is highly advanced but what would happen if they got their hands on the same kind?
DeleteI agree over the past 5-10 years everything has changed. Technology has getting better and it will stay getting better and growing. We are lucky to have this type of technology in this world. I wouldn't say we are the laziest generation, however there may be lots of lazy people in this world, but that where ever you are. Theres always gonna be people who put forth the effort and others who just dont care.

DeleteI agree with you as well throughout the years technology has been both our saving grace but has also been a huge pain in the butt. It has caused most of our populous to become lazy and way less active than normal the society we live in now completley revolves around technology not the old fashion way
DeleteI feel that apple is pushing the limits on how close we get to technology. With them coming out with new products every month like the smart watch or the apple eyeglass wear. The smart watch programing is to figure out the persons body that they are on and what health they are in. For example the smart watch when put on it will finds your pulse, can figure out your bmi, (body mass index) tell if you have gotten enough sleep at night and tell you if you have been sitting around to much and so something like “lets go out for a walk”. It builds a profile of you your habits and health and then stores it for you. All of the profiles are stored in icloud sever. Some people like this but what if that profile gets out with all of your personal information, habits, BMI, where you have been and how much you exercise for the world to see (because we all know how Icloud is so reliable). Apple is always trying to get closer and closer to humans with technology with there new with each new product. When will they cross the line? If they do what will be the deprecations.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree. Apple is moving a little to fast with their technology programs. every year theres something new and more expensive coming out and if we keep it up, in the next 20 years the iphone 26 is gonna be controlling our every move. As for the smart watch, i think it is a brilliant idea and i think it's gonna be very successful but after that them and all other major technology companies should take a 2 year break so that everyone can catch up.
DeleteI agree with you Malik some people are not comfortable with there info.
Deletemalik did you know that the apple logo was meant to be the Apple that Adam and Eve ate in the Garden of eden, so you see not everything is as innocent as it seems. I also notice Ramel acts all big and intelligent in school, but out of school he is a fun-loving adventurer, and add daredevil in there too. you what song would go good with Ramel " Can't be touched"

ReplyDeleteMaking a Splash: How the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge could change fundraising forever
ReplyDeleteAmericans give more than three $300 billion dollars annually to charitable causes. The ALS Ice Bucket challenge is when millions of people across the countries share videos of themselves getting doused with freezing ice water. The cause is to stop and find a known cure for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a fatal disease that attacks the nervous system. Margaret Anderson, executive director of Faster Cures believes that we focused too much on finding treatments for the thousands of diseases. The Ice Bucket challenge is a great way to help stop the diseases.
The ice bucket challenge was not invented by the ALS association, but was used to raise funds for other charities. Many people from different places come to donate in the ice bucket challenge. By doing this, we are able to find a treatment that can kill the disease. Various people upload a funny video of themselves being doused into a bucket of ice during the challenge. As soon as you finish uploading your video, call someone out and give him or her 24 hours to donate. This results in a sense of suspense and urgency.
Iggy Azalea just doused herself in a bikini before the match started. The challenges visual component fostered a casual one-upmanship. This was fantastic for awareness of the diseases. As a result, this allowed people to be fully connected to each other. In the ALS association, the challenge now is to sustain it’s momentum by showing donors that their money is making a meaningful difference against a real and awful affliction-though more shows of celebrity support won’t hurt either.
Protests are growing throughout the country after a Staten Island grand jury decides not to indict the police officer, Daniel Pantaleo who killed Eric Garner. Marching through streets, protesters shout, "I can't breathe," the last words Garner said before he died after being placed in a chokehold by the officer in July. These protests come on the heels of a series of nationwide demonstrations over last month's grand jury decision in Ferguson Missouri, not to indict police officer Darren Wilson in shooting Michael Brown. Protesters gather in Boston, New York, Chicago, Washington, D.C. and Pittsburgh. Some places people stopped traffic. More than 200 people are arrested in Manhattan. Subway service is disrupted in Boston when protesters stand on the tracks. Demonstrators gather on Boston Common and shout, "Justice now," during the city's lighting of its Christmas tree. This outbreak of protesters shows all the wrong that has been done in my opinion that acts that happened and that were not punished is wrong to me. Both of the police officers should have been indicted and went to jail for unnecessary acts of these people. Protesters are trying to show the cities what has been done and they do not like it.
ReplyDeleteToday something terrible happened. In Pakistan there was a horrific school shooting. It resulted 141 dead and most of them students. what those men did is not a sign of dying in honor of their country; but a sign of true cowardliness and stupidity. The rampage at the Army Public School and College began in the morning when seven militants scaled a BACK wall using a ladder, said Maj. Gen. Asim Bajwa, a military spokesman. When they reached an auditorium where students had gathered for an event, they opened fire. They shot one of the teachers in the head and then set her on fire and shouted "God is great!" as she screamed. Of the 141 people slain before government troops ended the assault eight hours later, 132 were children and nine were staff members. Another 121 students and three staff members were wounded. There were 7 cowardly shooters who all had explosives strapped to their chests and other heavy artillery
ReplyDeletethis fucking sickens me it's just horrible!
Yesterday in Pakistan a shooting at a military school happened. Taliban terrorists came in shouting “God is great” over and over and then started to shoot many children hiding under benches. More then a 100 children are injured and over 145 people dead. 135 being children and 10 being school staff members and soldiers. The Taliban walked into the auditorium of the school where they were taking a exam and shot at all of them killing most of them in minutes. I feel like this really is a terrible tragedy and they should set up a better system for when things like this may happen.
ReplyDeleteI hate it when things like this happen. This just shows how cowardly the Taliban are. They are uncivilized extremists who can only kill people when they are on their knees begging for mercy.
Delete(Devin Larkin) That is really sad, I wonder if these men were arrested, or killed. Schools need to be safer. Where was security, an officer or something to make schools a little more safe. What these men did had nothing to do with God, and I still don't really see why they would do such thing.

Some parents believe it is a “disaster waiting to happen”, or that they cant imagine how stressed the little girl is, considering the fact that a trip like that is very stressful to adults. Rosalie, the 11 year old, says she’s glad her mom lets her go where she wants alone. If she wasn’t allowed to travel alone, she wouldn’t be able to see her other family in other countries, or go to the school she wants to go to. She explained that staffs at hotels and airports treat her well, people on the train are friendly, and she doesn’t see any worries about “stranger danger” because there is always a large amount of people around when she is by herself. Looking from both perspectives, I understand both the horrified parents, and Anne Atkins herself. I understand parents don’t want anything to happen to their children, but I also understand that Anne wants her kids to explore the world and not be dragged along on family vacations.
I don't think theres anything wrong with her letting her kids go travel alone. if people treat them well, and they are mature i don't see the problem
Delete200-year-old time capsule found
ReplyDeleteA 200-year-old time capsule was found when trying to repair a water leak in the Massachusetts State House. The box measures 5-by-7 inches. The capsule was found in one of the corners of the “New” Massachusetts State House. Experts say that coins from 1652 to 1855 and was placed in a leather bag. That bag was placed in a metal box and then enclosed in the corner block.
This actually is not the only time capsule found in Massachusetts. Three months prior to the newest discovery a descendant to an artist who made the lion and unicorn statues, that hold symbols of British rule, spoke about it’s existence. When the lion and unicorn were removed from their hiding spots officials found a copper capsule in the head of the lion. This capsule was about the size of a shoebox.
The copper container contained a wooden piece of the original lion statue and photographs of officials and workers from 1901. They also found an envelope addressed to the people of the future, but the envelope was empty. The envelope was from the daily newspapers at City Hall.
Some time before the year ends the Bostonian Society who created a new time capsule will place a Boston Marathon medal, an Apple iPhone 5, and Red Sox baseball tickets in side the capsule and place it back into the lions head. There hope is that someone in the future will find the lion and the new time capsule.
I think this is so cool, and that time capsules are so neat. its a great way for people in the future to see how things were!
DeleteThat is so cool! I would love to find a time capsule and crack it open to see what types of treasure I would find. What makes this even more amazing is that there was another. I think it’s really awesome that the Bostonian Society is going to bury a time capsule of their own, it makes me curious to think about what people of the future might think when they open it and find its contents.
Delete19-year old woman, Tiffany VanAlstyne told the police two masked men abducted Kenneth White, her 5-year-old cousin under her care in upstate New York around 1:30 pm Thursday and drove off in a pickup truck. An Amber Alert was issued a half-hour later for the boy and hours later his body was found intentionally covered with snow near his home by the K-9 unit (police dogs). Kenneth was strangled to death and Tiffany was charged for his murder with second-degree murder. Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple stated that the child was “thrown away like a piece of trash” and that this was a “senseless death.” He also says that this wasn’t abduction and that this investigation isn’t over yet. Kenneth was about three feet and five inches tall white male, with short brown hair in a Mohawk, brown eyes and weighs about 45 pounds. His twin sister, Cheyenne, four-year-old sister, and him were living with Tiffany’s parents. His father, Jason White, lives in Massachusetts and his mother, Christine White, lives elsewhere in New York. This is truly a sad story; I would like to know what Tiffany was thinking and why she did it. What do you think about this story?
ReplyDeleteI found an article on CNN titled 7-year-old survives plane crash that kills 4 in Kentucky. This little girl named Sailor Gutzler was the only one to survive and make it out of the plane crash; her mom, dad, sister, and cousin were traveling from Florida in a Piper PA-34 aircraft. The plane crashed Friday evening in Western Kentucky, she walked pare foot to a random house and knocked on a guys door named Larry Wilkins, when approaching her he could see that Sailors arms and legs were scratched up from the crash and she has a nose bleed, "She told me that her mom and dad were dead," Wilkins said. "And that she had been in a plane crash.". It’s a miracle nothing horrifying happened to her and that the injuries were not life-threatening. Its unbelievable this little girl made it out of there and she’s very brave and I personally wouldn’t see any 7 year old doing what she did. I feel for this girl going through so much at such a young age and losing her parents.
ReplyDeleteA 17-year-old girl named Malala Yousafzai of Pakistan and 60-year-old Kailash Satyarthi of India has been awarded the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize, making Malala the youngest person to have ever received this award. The news caused massed celebration and dancing throughout the streets of Mingora along with the town’s Khushal Public School, which is owned by Malala’s father. During her enrolment in her father’s school, a Taliban gunman shot Malala in the head because she insisted that girls as well as boys have the right to education. She survived and has continued both her activism and her studies. The second winner of the prize, Kailash, is a leader of a global movement to end child slavery and exploitative child labor. He quit his job as an electrical engineer in 1980 to devote himself full time to saving tens of thousands of child slaves as well as developed a model for their education and rehabilitation. It’s awesome to see someone so young stand up for what they believe in like that, especially when they’re looking down the barrel of a gun. She was shot in the head, survived, yet still continued her fight for educational rights. Hopefully we could see more young people with the same kind of bravery and commitment.
ReplyDeleteMy blog post is based on an article written by Darrell Anderson. The term Christian Anarchist is usually thought of as being an oxymoron. I feel Christian anarchy should get more light reflected on it because this is a very important topic that should be discussed. The Bible states “Thou shalt not steal”, yet we currently let our government take taxes from us and give it to people who sit around all day and wait for a pay check without working for it. For a nation that is supposedly under God as it states in our pledge, our government doesn’t act like it. One-third of Americans want God out of the Pledge, but I feel that since we were founded by Christians we should leave it that way. Yes, America is a free country and we are accepting, that is part of being a Christian is tolerance, but we shouldn’t have to change our laws to fit others’ needs, if you don’t like it then leave! So, yes it is possible to be a Christian Anarchist, and in fact it’s completely plausible. There is a huge difference between Anarchy and Christian Anarchy. Anarchy usually implies that you would act as Satan would without laws, Christian Anarchy implies that you realize there are laws, but you won’t follow laws that don’t correlate with God.
ReplyDeleteRecently a sports center analyst died at the age of 49. I remember turning on the TV and seeing him up there. According to CNN he had many years on the sidelines and doing other stuff before he got on sports center. I didn’t have the chance to see how he had died. CNN said he died from a lengthy battle of cancer. Watching sports center I never knew he had cancer and what he’s been through. I would remember r I would watch sports center before I went to school or throughout the day, even sometimes at night. I’ve seen instagram post from other famous people about this occurrence that knew him personally. I do know one thing and that’s Stuart Scott will be missed by a lot of people who either knew him or have seen him on TV. Moment of silences have token place at several sporting event such as games of the NFL and NBA.
ReplyDeleteRecently Fernando torres has made a return to his old club atletico Madrid there has been a lot of controversy about this move because of current form (lets say he hasn’t scored a lot) In 142 games he scored 81 goals in Liverpool I know that’s a lot but that was along time ago recently at his ex club chelsea he only scored 26 goals in 100 games not as much as in Liverpool. Recently the manager offered Torres on a loan to the Italian club AC Milan and he only scored 1 goal there even though he play half of the season which is enough to score more than 1 goal. Fernando torres might be old for a soccer player (30) but I think he can do a good job at his old club Atletico Madrid his debut game is going to be against one of the giants of the spanish league Real Madrid.
ReplyDeleteNot so long ago a man shot two police officers. I can't find if he killed them or not but he wrote on Instagram that he was going to do it. He was taking two police officers lives for taking Michael Brown's life and Eric Gardeners. Basically an eye for an eye. I understand what he is saying but i don't think its right. You cannot fight fire with fire and it won't solve anything. It's crazy because people die in hood areas almost everyday. People just don't take notice because its not all over social media. There are hundreds of lives gone and no one protested about them or even knows they existed. He was wrong about the way he took action but I do understand why he was trying to take action.
ReplyDeleteso your saying it was ok for him to take two lives that nothing to do with this conflict at all? how can you say you understand why he did this? he wasn't even family with the kid so how was it ok to take someone else's life if you don't even have anything to do with the conflict? so if you understand where he's coming from do you understand where all the people that were rioting coming from to? the people that basically ruined hundreds of peoples of lives?
Deletehttp://www.foxnews.com/us/2015/01/06/fbi-raises-stakes-in-hunt-for-man-wanted-in-08-killing-daughters/?intcmp=latestnews
ReplyDeleteThe FBI is restarting a search from 2008, about a man that killed his daughters. First off they should have done this search when it was hot, in 2008. I don’t know why, now, in 2015 they’re finally deciding to bring it up again. For all of the people that finally got over the death of the girls and finally are starting to let go, are going to have all of those emotions coming back up, and they are going to get mad, and upset all over again. Its just stupid in my opinion.
But on the flip side, I do think it’s a good idea to finally find the man that did it so that all the people hurt from this tragedy, will finally be relieved because the man will be locked away.
I agree with your opinion and do not see why they bring it back up seven years later. This should have been done in 2008 when it happened. The good thing about it though is that they at least doing it and not letting someone who killed his own blood get away with it.
Deletewell why would they get pissed off? at least they know that someone actually cares about there loved ones. how would you feel if your cousin was killed and they couldn't find anything about it but then 6 years later with all the new technology they are coming back to this specific case just to serve all those girls justice. do you really think that they would still be mad? know they know that the law is atleast trying to get the man back for what he did!
DeleteFor this blog assignment I’m going to talk about gay marriage being legalized in Florida. I am with and against it at the same time, I’m for it because I believe you should be with whoever makes you happy. What makes me be against It is gay marriage is a sin and shouldn’t be done, being with them could be fine but I believe marrying them is not right. Florida is now the 36th state to have legalized gay marriage and that also means that 70 percent of Americans are now living in a state where it is legal for gay and lesbian people to get married. If it were up to me it would be ok to be with someone of the same sex but marrying them would not be legal.
ReplyDeleteIn St. Petersburg, Florida a man threw his 5 year-old daughter off of bridge. News of the girl's death went all the way to Tallahassee and the state Department of Children and Families. A 911 call from Wednesday reveals a lawyer reporting Jonchuck at the office with his daughter as he claimed he was God and wanted to read the Bible in Swedish. After the very sad loss of Phoebe, the department has immediately started changing their Hotline criteria to include a trigger for when a guardian is believed to be experiencing a psychotic episode that would require a CPI visit within four hours and a notification to law enforcement. They said “ We need to do more for the children that depend on us”.
ReplyDelete"There was a car that was parked on the side of the bridge when i was approaching" said one of the pedestrians. as time has told what that car was doing there it turns out that it was a young girl and her father in that vehicle. this is how it all started; a five year old girl was sitting in the back seat as her and her father were driving down the road. she said something and was arguing with her dad. no one is yet to know what there conversation was. the father then got very aggravated and pulled the car over and THREW HIS FIVE YEAR OLD DAUGHTER OFF THE TAMPA BAY BRIDGE!! it killed her immediately when she hit the water.
ReplyDeletehow would that make you feel as a father? why would you give life to someone but yet take it back so soon? what are we coming to, how do you have enough nerve to throw someone off a bridge let alone your own FIVE year old daughter! how would you live with your self knowing that you have killed your own daughter. in my opinion he should get the same thing she did.
DeleteFor my current event I am going to be talking about the gun attack in Paris. On January 7th gunman shot 12 people at the Paris office of French satirical magazine. There was 3 gunmen and after the shooting they fled by a car. The masked Shooters opened fire with assault rifles in the office and exchanged shots with police in the street outside before escaping by car. They later abandoned the car in Rue de Meaux, northern Paris, where they hijacked a second car. Four of the people that died were cartoonist for the magazines. The editor and two police were killed while gunfire went off. Four other people was critically injured. There was originally two gunman but the French minister caught 3 gunman on security camera’s. The shooting started at the magazine's daily editorial meeting. Some people believe that this was one of the most horrific shootings in France since 1961 when right-wingers who wanted to keep Algeria French bombed a train, killing 28 people. I feel sad for the people that passed away. No one knows what the shooters motives to do that. The families of the people that passed away must feel lost and anger knowing that those 2 people that murdered a member of there family or friend is still out there.
ReplyDeletei Think the attack in paris is truly devastating. The fact that they went into the news office and killed the cartoonist over a small little comic is terrible, Im not sure if they got caught or not but i really hope they face the consequences and face the death penalty or something of the sort,

ReplyDeleteMy current event is about the flight gone missing. I feel as if it was one of the members of my family was on that flight i would feel devastated. But, if they keep on looking i think they’ll find it. Hopefully no one died. I think they should carry a small boat on the plane just incase accidents like this happen.

ReplyDelete"Iraq Shuts Down Abu Gharib Prison" In early April of 2014 Iraq closed down the infamous high-security prison know as the Abu Gharib Prison, due to Sunni insurgents possibly overrunning it. The Justice Ministry had to move over two thousand prisoners to other high security prisons across central and northern Iraq. This may not be permanent, but if the prison will open again the Sunni insurgency must be tamed. Some of these prisoners were Amercian soldiers who were captured during attacks. The have been multiple escapees that are now leaders of small military groups. Another reason for the shut down of this prison is because there have been many gunfights which have gotten closer and closer to the prison. This prison was also a place for tortue, they've recently killed dictator Saddam Hussein, and over 4,00 others. Abu Ghraib later became a byword for abuses carried out by US forces following the 2003 invasion when photographs surfaced the following year showing Iraqi detainees being humiliated by US guards, starting worldwide outrage. -Devin Larkin Period 4
ReplyDeleteA 21-year old mother in Louisiana was charged with negligent homicide after her two children died in a fire while she was getting her hair done. She left her 4-year-old daughter and 3-year-old son home alone unsupervised with two gas space heaters turned on in inside the house, by the time the mother got home the entire house was engulfed in fire. I find this tragic and disgusting that a mother would neglect her two very young children in such a way, leaving them to such an awful death. Those two children’s lives were stolen from them and no mother should treat her children in such a way. I have many younger cousins who are within that range of age and I could not imagine such a thing ever happening to any of them. I really do find this tragic that two children died do to neglect.
ReplyDeleteThe fact that the woman’s hair was more important than her kids is absurd. A lot of parents these days leave their children home alone for a couple hours thinking nothing bad could possibly happen but you honestly never know. Any parent that leaves their 4 year old home alone should be charged with neglect even if it is just for a short time. It’s tragic that those kids had to lose their lives because of their mother’s stupidity, but hopefully this incident will show other parents that it’s not okay to leave a young child home alone.
DeleteI personally think this was an act of murder, you don't just leave two gas tanks on with your four year old and three year old home alone unsupervised. Thats truly ridicoulous, and to go get her hair done? You can do that at home. people are so materialistic now days and i can't stand it.
DeleteMy current event is about Entertainment Weekly’s ‘Boyhood’ cover. The cover has been poorly photo shopped and it basically is creepy. Ellar Coltrane does not have a round face to begin with, it’s more stretched out and proportionate. However, on the cover they squished his face, and made it round. He also has his arms around smaller generations of himself… that is kind of really weird. The two smaller generations of him look as if they took bodies of random kids and placed the head of Ellar Coltrane on them. Its okay to photo shop acne marks or to help enhance a photo, but to not make a person have “soulless eyes boring into your flesh.”
ReplyDeleteIn Sri Lanka, Pope Francis traveled to the jungles of war-torn northern Sri Lanka on Wednesday for a deeply symbolic show of solidarity with the victims of the country's 25-year civil war and to urge Sri Lankans as a whole to forgive one another "for all the evil which this land has known. An estimated 300,000 people waving the white and yellow Vatican flags welcomed Francis to the Our Lady of Madhu shrine, which is revered by both Sinhalese and Tamil Catholics, as well as people of other faiths. No pope has ever traveled to the northern Tamil region, and Francis' visit to Sri Lanka's holiest Christian shrine — hours after canonizing the country's first saint as a model for unity — provided a poignant backdrop for his appeal that Sri Lankans not only reconcile but forgive one another for the sake of peace. Tamil Tiger rebels fought a 25-year civil war to demand an independent Tamil nation after decades of perceived discrimination by governments dominated by the Sinhalese majority. The government finally crushed the rebels in a bloody series of offensives that ended in 2009. During the war, the Madhu shrine — which was originally built in the 16th century by Catholics fleeing persecution in the northern Jaffna kingdom — again became a place of refuge with thousands of people fleeing there for cover. Earlier in the morning, Francis celebrated a Mass before a half-million people in Colombo's Galle Face Green to canonize the Rev. Joseph Vaz as Sri Lanka's first saint. Vaz was a 17th century Indian missionary who revived the faith in Sri Lanka during a time of anti-Catholic persecution by Dutch colonists, who were Protestant Calvinists. Francis told the crowd that Vaz lived at a time — like today — when Catholics were a minority and often persecuted, and yet he ministered to all, regardless of their ethnic or religious background. "St. Joseph shows us the importance of transcending religious divisions in the service of peace," Francis said in his homily, delivered in English and then translated for the crowd into both Sinhalese and Tamil. He said the Sri Lankan church today only wants to continue Vaz's legacy of service to all, asking only for the freedom to preach in return Catholics make up slightly more than 6 percent of Sri Lanka's population of 21 million. They are a distinct minority compared to Buddhists, who make up about 70 percent, with Hindus comprising 13 percent. Most Sinhalese are Buddhist and most Tamils Hindu, but the Catholic Church counts both ethnic groups as its members, and as a result considers itself a source of unity for the country. Monks at the Agrashravaka Temple also opened a casket containing some important Buddhist relics, an event that usually only takes place once a year and draws thousands of Buddhists who wait for days in long lines to pay their respects. The head monk at the temple, Banagala Upatissa, said opening the relics was "the highest honor and respect" they could show to the pontiff. The park has a capacity of 500,000 and the Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, said the crowd more than surpassed the half-million mark. On Thursday, Francis flies to the Philippines for the second and final leg of his Asian pilgrimage.
ReplyDeleteThe UK government raised its terror threat level Friday from "substantial" to "severe," the fourth highest of five levels, in response to events in Iraq and Syria, where ISIS militants have seized a large swath of territory.
ReplyDelete"That means that a terrorist attack is highly likely, but there is no intelligence to suggest that an attack is imminent," Home Secretary Theresa May said.
The "root cause" of Britain's terror threat is "Islamist extremism," Prime Minister David Cameron said. The execution of American journalist James Foley is clear evidence that ISIS's fight in Iraq and Syria "is not some foreign conflict thousands of miles from home that we can hope to ignore," according to the UK leader.
Here in America, public schools are a very significant thing around this country. Some of the statistics and things they are doing to push these 4th through 12th graders to do better and succeed are close to outrageous! Students should not be paid, because at a school named 58 high, students got paid to show up and take tests and get a high mark. They had the possibility of pocketing up to $500 depending on their scores, which is a very significant amount for a smaller child. Yet this program got an F because of no improvement in math and English; therefore, supporting a program that doesn’t have any measurable results seems stupid.
ReplyDeleteAs selfies begin to become popular they even made the hit song “#selfie” by the chainsmokers, It’s been said that people that constantly take selfies are more narcissistic, and some even psychopathic with antisocial tendencies and I think its just a stupid way to make yourself feel good about how you look, in my opinion no one should feel obligated to make themselves look better. It’s a huge cause of depression and suicide along with eating disorders. Because many people joke around by insulting one another but sometimes jokes go too far and really break someone apart. It’s been very prominent in our society and has messed up a lot of different people. Some just do it to get attention and some do it because they want people to pretty much tell them they’re pretty selfies are a huge waste of time because though they’re a good way to get a photo it would be better why? , Because it would be much more meaningful than just making a face and a lame pose for likes on facebook or instagram or twitter. It’s exteremly pointless. I think our society needs to fix social media and how photos are posted online.
ReplyDeleteThe former gov of Massachusetts Mitt Romney will not make a third attempt to become president of the united states. He said he will give other members of the house the opportunity to run for office. Many of Romney’s supporters confirmed the phone call that took place at a.m. This call comes from Romney had faced deep skepticism from the republican party p.o.v. over his interest in running for president once again. His surprise announcement to donors earlier this month that he’s interested in making another run for the white house but not exactly the president position. Some of Romney’s supporters do not agree with his decision to not run for president a third time but he will go with his decision. A long time supporter of Romney said “he knows all of the pressure out there” he needs to be definite more now than rather later. Some people view Mitt Romney’s decision as pressure. Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush to sign up donors and key operatives and activists. In my opinion I do not hink he should run for presidency again because all of the pressure might get to him and what if he is not a good president? How will that be good for America?
ReplyDelete(CNN) - ”A fossilized human jawbone discovered by a Taiwanese fisherman, sold to an antique shop, then recovered by researchers may reveal a new kind of prehistoric man. The unlikely find could be nearly 200,000 years old and suggests a fourth type of ancient human who lived in Asia long before Homo sapiens ever came to be. Three other known archaic Asian hominids include Homo Erectus, found in Java and China; the shorter Homo Floresiensis from Indonesia; and Neanderthals in the Russian Altai mountains. Scientists believe that human jaws and teeth became smaller as they evolved. But unlike other fossils of the time, the newly discovered jawbone is thick with large molars, suggesting the existence of a different group.” I think that this discovery is very interesting and would like to see more about this research. A new type of human being could mean all kinds of new laws and theories about human evolution and species.
ReplyDeleteNew inventions are coming fast and very effective. Sooner or later a lot of people will be without a job, because robots will replace them. They are much less expensive. Robots make much less mistakes the humans do. But if robots keep replacing people in there jobs soon little to no one will have jobs to make money. We could go into another depression. But a good thing is it will make it a lot easier like they have a car that drives itself I think that’s really amazing. And a doctor robot could know a lot more about medicines and illnesses then a regular doctor can know about, because it can hold a lot more knowledge. But if they replace teachers with robots I feel like I wont be able to learn correctly like I need someone in front of me for me to learn most effectively. So future inventions can be good but also bad for our economy and making things easy for humans.
