Current Events Blog

English II Scholars,

Four times per quarter you will be responsible for reading, watching, or listening to some newsworthy publication.  You can choose to read a column in a local, regional, or national paper, magazine, or periodical; you may elect to listen to a podcast, talk radio, or online radio; or, you may watch the news, a youtube channel, or another form of online video.  The point being, you will educate yourself for at least 30 minutes a week on current events in our world.

Your weekly assignment is simple:

  1. Consume the required minimum 30 minutes of current events information
  2. Craft a response to the current event (at least 200 words)
  3. Respond to at least two of your peers' responses (at least 75 words)
That's it!

Of course, your responses must be thoughtful and full of commentary.  Please do not summarize (beyond the first sentence) your 30 minutes of current events findings.  Instead, figure out the importance of the information you have consumed on an individual, local, regional, national, and/or international level.  While I'm certainly asking you for your opinion on the current events, I do not want you to stop simply at your opinion--please do the requisite research.  If you disagree with a policy, go beyond "X politician/event/region/whatever sucks!"  Determine what you disagree with it and make sure your reasoning is empirical, not emotional.

Similarly, when you respond to your peers, go beyond "I agree/disagree with your post!," or "You're so smart/stupid, X!"  Please do your peers the due diligence of responding to their ideas and implications--perhaps your current event is somehow related to the event that your peer discussed?  Find the thread of reasoning and follow it!

Beyond the required 30 minutes per week of somehow consuming current events (less than 5 mins a day), this project should not consume more than one hour of your time.

If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please let me know in the comments below.

Educationally yours,

Mr. De Ceglie

GOP Congress could boost U.S. Economy

Based on the Sunday November 9th 2014 News journal, the heading “GOP Could Boost the U.S. Economy” grabbed my attention. Below this heading were significant topics pertaining to the growth of the U.S. economy. The topics were: “Go Big on Immigration”, “Boost Energy Boom”, and “Open up Foreign Markets”.
According to Douglas Holtz Eakin, he believes that the economy in the U.S. would benefit greatly if more people in the workforce given visa and legal status. He added that the economy would grow tremendously. Furthermore, it attracts professionals from abroad such as doctors, engineers, and scientists. These people contribute more money to the country because they have high paying occupations to the economy.
On the other subject of boosting energy and natural gas, the Republican senate came up with two actions to uplift the economy. One action was to push President Obama to ban the exporting oil from other countries. Secondly, they could make a deal to construct the XL Keystone pipeline. This pipeline transports oil from Canada to it’s refineries along the Gulf of Mexico. President Obama is yet to approve the pipeline’s construction.
The last topic was the opening of foreign markets. Economists believe that the country should enter in trade deals in opening markets for goods made in America from the country of Malaysia to Peru. This partnership would require the assistance of Republican senate and President Obama to make this happen. Based on the economists’ perspective, the economy would expand to receiving a boost of 77.5 billion dollars in the year 2025 in this trade deal market.

I got this newspaper at a gas station.

    1. I think the government is crazy for bringing the first American who had Ebola back to the U.S. from Africa. They should of built cautionary tents back in Africa until they were sure the patients were safe. But instead of doing the logical thing they did something really stupid and put all of our lives at risk. Now since then there have been multiple reports of people in America getting Ebola even a doctor who was supposedly safe he CDC approve suits. The government tells us that everything is under control and the odds of us contracting this disease is low but me personally i think there's something more to this

  4. I think that that is crazy and who ever committed this act should be charged for animal cruelty. They should of thought what it would feel like to be that deer; not being able to eat, drink, and probably sleep for days. I think it's just horrible what some people do to animals these days and not just domestic animals but wild animals as well. We should all treat animals with respect and also i think we should get rid of all zoos and let the animals be free!

  5. Have you ever heard of "The Choking Game"? This is a game that supposedly has been around for years and is popular amongst kids aging from 12-14. Well for one school district it has raised a deadly concern. Iron Count School District in Utah has had four deaths in the last three years from this "choking game". The Game is when you Asphyxiate or choke someone or yourself just enough to cut off the airways until he or she feels a euphoric rush. Some of the outcomes have been passing out, irreversible brain damage, and Death.

  8. The article I read is written by a sports ceneter source. It is about Adrian Peterson he was indicted in September on a felony charge of injury to a child for using a wooden switch to discipline his 4-year-old son earlier this year. He is suspended for the reminder of the season without pay for this. His son had minor injuries like cuts, marks and bruising to his thighs, back and on one of his testicles. Some people feel like his son is gonna have emotional and psychological trauma. I honestly feel like he has the right to beat his kid but to a certain extent. Yes he went a little bit over board. At the same time I feel like this is getting blown outta proportion. If Peterson wasn’t as big of a star like he is this wouldn’t be such a big deal I feel.
